Box Office Preview: 16-06-2011

Welcome to our weekly preview of all the latest films that will be opening in local cinemas this weekend. Check out the full list of new releases after the jump.

Mr. Popper's Penguins

Director: Mark Waters. Starring: Jim Carrey and Carla Gugino.

I am yet to watch a live action-animation hybrid comedy film that's any good and judging by the trailer this won't be the first. Whatever happened to the Jim Carrey that was actually funny? Someone please bring him back!

Source Code

Director: Duncan Jones. Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michele Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright.

The director of Moon is back with another sci-fi thriller but this time instead of moon bases we have train stations. It will be interesting to see how Jake G's performance compares to the farce that was Prince Of Persia but in any event I have no doubt that this will be a much better film.

Sanctum

Director: Aliester Grierson. Starring: Richard Roxburgh. Rhys Wakefield and Alice Parkinson.

If you haven't been living under a rock since Avatar came out in 2009 then you probably have seen a 3D film by now. I'm sure then you will have noticed how dark the theatre is compared to watching a normal 2D film. Which brings me to my biggest fear about this film that theatres are dark enough as it is without watching a 3D film primarily set deep underwater and in caves that are not particularly well lit. Plus those Aussie accents are damn annoying. Take my word for it and wait for Werner Herzog's Cave Of Forgotten Dreams.

Which one these new releases are you looking forward to watching?
