The South African Box Office Report

Welcome to our weekly box office report where we reveal the Top 10 films in South Africa over the last weekend. See the full chart after the jump.

1. Rio-3D Week 2. (Last Week: Number 1). [94 Screens] Weekend Gross: R 2 446 035 (-45%).
Per Screen Average: R 26 022. All Time Gross: R 7 616 351.
As I predicted, we have the same number one film as last week. Rio seems to have taken not just South Africa, but the entire world by storm and has already clocked up $ 170 096 560 (R 1,1 Billion) worldwide in only 2 weeks. It will be probably be number 1 again next weekend because I don't see any of the upcoming releases beating it and it also happens to be Easter Weekend which traditionally means good business for family/religious oriented films.

2. Limitless NEW [50] Weekend: R 1 065 551.
Per Screen: R 21 312. All Time: R 1 065 551.
The best new film of 2011 so far, according us anyways, opens to a surprisingly good number. If you haven't seen this film yet please go and see it now. Trust me you won't regret it.

3. Just Go With It (LW:3). [63] Weekend: R 860 592 (-28,5%).
Per Screen: R 13 659. All Time: R 11 544 315.
There's not much more to be said here. It just boggles my mind why so many people keep flocking to such an incredibly unfunny film!

4. Unknown (LW:2). [50] Weekend: R 806 387 (-34,6%).
Per Screen: R 16 129. All Time: R 2 513 088.

5. Water For Elephants NEW [40] Weekend: R 680 993.
Per Screen: R 17 027. All Time: R 680 993.
This is a disappointing opening for Water For Elephants which once again proves that Robert Pattinson can't open a film outside of the Twilight Saga. This doesn't bode well at all for his post-Twilight career.

6. No Strings Attached (LW:4). [55] Weekend: R 680 237 (-31,7%).
Per Screen: R 12 370. All Time: R 630 739.

7. Hop (LW:5). [76] Weekend: R 545 091 (-34,7%).
Per Screen: R 7 174. All Time: R 3 967 352.

8. The Mechanic (LW:7). [48] Weekend: R 390 355 (-44,1%).
Per Screen: R 8 132. All Time: R 2 941 133.

9. Rango (LW:6). [61] Weekend: R 357 449 (-51,9%).
Per Screen: R 5 858. All Time: R 9 021 084.

10. Gnomeo And Juliet (LW:8). [27] Weekend: R 317 923 (-42,5%).
Per Screen: R 11 776. All Time: R 7 675 915.

Overall box office is down 27,5% from last week which is not surprising, seeing that Rio is still number 1 even though it's down by 45%.
