Avengers: Infinity War has been out for more than a week now but like most people we are still talking about it and analysing and dissecting every detail of the movie no matter how big or small it may seem. One of the most interesting and most fun things to discuss is who was the strongest Avenger in the movie so we've decided to list a top 5 based on the events in the movie.

****SPOILER ALERT****

5. CAPTAIN AMERICA

Look let's be honest, compared to Thanos, Cap is pretty much a nobody and indeed Thanos could probably very easily defeat him without any Infinity Stones. Which makes it even more impressive that Captain America took Thanos on when he had 5 Infinity Stones and was able to actually grab the Infinity Gauntlet and delay Thanos just about long enough to allow Scarlet Witch to be able to destroy the Soul Stone. Obviously it was all moot in the end because Thanos used the Time Stone to reverse the destruction of the Soul Stone but hey at least Cap actually went and challenged Thanos unlike some other so called heroes whose names we won't mention... **cough-Hulk-cough**

4. IRON MAN

Iron Man was very impressive in this film. He was singularly focused and determined and in the end he bravely took on Thanos one-on-one even though he would've known that he was unlikely to win. In fact he not only took Thanos on but he was able to land some blows on the Mad Titan. In the end Thanos won the fight but he gained respect for Stark for his bravery and even commented that "I hope they remember you".

3. SCARLET WITCH

Scarlet Witch wasn't strong in the sense of being physically strong but instead her strength derived from the fact that she was the only person who had the power to destroy an Infinity Stone. For most of the movie she was understandably very reluctant to do this because the destruction of the Soul Stone would've meant a certain death for her beloved Vision. So she did what any good person would do and tried to find an alternative means of removing the Soul Stone from Vision's forehead without killing him but unfortunately, Thanos' Army attacked Wakanda before Shuri could finish the extraction. When push came to shove she eventually destroyed the Soul Stone while holding off Thanos himself which is no mean feat but as mentioned earlier this was all undone by Thanos' use of the Time Stone.

2. DOCTOR STRANGE

This is another Avenger who is also not necessarily physically strong but just like Scarlet Witch he doesn't need to be because he is a sorcerer with all manner of tricks and spells. Most crucially he has possession of the Time Stone which he uses to determine that there is only path to defeating Thanos and then he follows through with that plan even though he knows it will lead to his own death. Nonetheless he does a brilliant job of fighting and slowing down Thanos to the point where the team almost gets the gauntlet off the purple villain until one moment of madness from Star Lord ruins the plan and Thanos fights back and is eventually victorious. But then again, maybe Thanos' victory was part of Doctor Strange's plan for Thanos' ultimate defeat...

1. THOR

First of all... Thor is a literal god. Literal in the literal sense unlike how the word is sometimes misused nowadays. He is able to literally withstand the full force of a neutron star from close range in order to allow the giant dwarf Eitri to forge a weapon that is powerful enough to kill Thanos. He then is able to successfully wield the weapon (after making a grand entrance for the ages!) and strikes a seemingly fatal blow at Thanos just as the villain has acquired the final Infinity Stone for his collection. Sadly, like most other apparent victories in this film, this is only a temporary reprieve as Thanos still has just about enough strength left to use the full powers of the Infinity Gauntlet and just like that, half of the living beings in the universe are gone.

What do you think? Do you agree with the list or are there other heroes you would have included in this list? Unless you have been living under a rock for the last several months, you should be aware by now that there's a new Star Wars movie coming out late next year. Up until now details about the new film's plot and characters have been pretty much non-existent but with principal photography scheduled to start soon news about the casting was bound to start trickling out. And so, after many months of countless internet rumours about who would be in the movie and who wouldn't, the good folks at Disney and Lucasfilm have finally made the official casting announcement. Check out who's made the cut after the jump.

From the official Star Wars website:
The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy
Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars
of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony
Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, "We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars:
Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved
original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring
this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks,
and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a
screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J.
Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the
composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

By now we're all familiar with the original cast so there's nothing new or unexpected in that part of the press release. What's more intriguing is finding out who the new guys and girl are so here's a brief rundown of each of the new cast members.

John Boyega

John Boyega is a 22 year-old Nigerian-British actor most famous for his role as a gang-leader called Moses in the brilliant British indie sci-fi film called Attack The Block. The fact that he is the first name on the list has led many to speculate that he could be the lead in the film but that has neither been confirmed nor denied by the producers. If it does turn out to be true though it would be quite a fantastic achievement for a young black actor to nab the lead role in a new trilogy of Star Wars films. Fingers crossed that this particular rumour turns out to be true.

Daisy Ridley

Daisy Ridley is the one cast member that even I have never heard of before so she could easily be either the ace or the joker in the pack. According to her Wikipedia page she’s
featured in the recent BBC Entertainment TV show Mr Selfridge and will next
appear in The Inbetweeners Movie 2. Apart from that and a few other shows she
hasn’t really had too many other high-profile roles so we’ll just have to wait
until Episode VII comes out to see how she fares in a major role.<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
Adam Driver you’ll be familiar with
as Adam from Lena Dunham’s TV show GIRLS. He’s also had a couple of notable
appearances in films such as J. Edgar, Lincoln and Inside Llewyn Davis. Overall
Oscar Isaac is a veteran TV and film
actor with over 12 years’ worth of industry experience with roles in films such
as Body of Lies, Drive and The Bourne Legacy. His breakthrough role came last
year with his critically-acclaimed performance in the Coen Brothers’ Inside
Llewyn Davis where he played the lead character.

Andy Serkis is probably one of the
best actors that most people have never heard of. The reason for this is that
he specialises in performance capture acting and therefore in his most
memorable roles the audience only sees the end product which is a computer
generated character. Amongst others he has played King Kong in the eponymous
2005 film, Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Captain Haddock on 2011’s
The Adventures of Tintin and Gollum in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. On the basis of such a unique resume it
appears quite likely that he will once again play a CGI character, possibly
even a villain.

Domhnall Gleeson is a 30 year-old
Irish actor who, just like Oscar Isaac above, has featured in supporting roles
in dozens of films over a decade long career. Lookout for him in this year’s
Unbroken which even at this early stage is already attracting awards season
buzz.

85 year-old Max von Sydow is the
true elder statesman of the crew with a career span longer than all of the
other cast members have been alive. His most recent high-profile role was in
2011’s Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close where his performance as The
Renter earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.
Well, his recent films such as Pluto Nash and the Dr Doolittle series were disgustingly bad so maybe we are giving him a second chance. I rate he wants to be in a superhero movie and needs to get into Hollywood's heads again. He'll be better than Gervais was at this year's Oscars. Gervais just doesn't do stand-up well - he should stick to sitcoms.

Alistair AndersonAlistair Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00354851981579577005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008456083878756576.post-79404285974098023982011-07-17T20:32:00.008+02:002011-07-17T20:50:30.238+02:00Adam Sandler needs to be funny again
Courtesy of Mymoviespot.com, viz: http://www.mymoviespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/adam-sandler-happy-gilmore.jpg

Twenty minutes into Adam Sandler's Grown Ups and I realise this really is just a bunch of has-been comedians with tired jokes and some daft ones.

Adam Sandler needs to cease from his glut of bad children's or family films. Or is Grown Ups for adults?

Bring back the Adam Sandler of the 1990s or get him to play a villain or a serious role as in Punch-Drunk Love. Fine, Punch-Drunk Love was the kind of rare great film that few actors can be expected to star in twice.

Nevertheless, I'd like some more Waterboy and some less Just Go With It. I did say he would be in that animated film about monsters, so maybe that is a start.

Alistair AndersonAlistair Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00354851981579577005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008456083878756576.post-21682574091231773742011-07-16T18:32:00.004+02:002011-07-17T20:45:55.130+02:00The Bang Bang Club - dull premiere

I went to the permiere of the co-South African - co-Canadian produced "The Bang Bang Club" this week.

The movie is based on the stories of four South African photographers who took photos of much of the violence in 180s South Africa.

It is based on a book about them but I ofund the film played to emotions and lacked believability.

A more in depth review of the film may be published on this blog in the near future.

I will say that I found the actual premiere boring. There were none of the international stars and the public, which was invited to attend, by paying R70 each, seemed confused. As far as celebrities go, I think I saw Elana Afrika there. But where were all of the movie celebs?

Next time a movie is filmed in SA or with SA people, let's hope the industry is better represented.

Alistair AndersonAlistair Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00354851981579577005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008456083878756576.post-85331124264999752002011-07-14T23:15:00.004+02:002011-07-16T18:32:02.899+02:00Whatever happened to... It is a good film in my opinion. I could even stomach the "gameboy jungle run".

However, this post is not a review. What struck me about the movie was it made me ask the question again; what happened to the French costars of the man who is now one of the world's biggest actors, Leonardo Di Caprio?

Well, both the guy, Guillaume Canet and the girl, Virginie Ledoyen respectively, went on to star in French movies. It was on eTV on Sunday, which reminded me of its evil. It may have seemed less disgusting if Terminator 2 was not as good as it was but number three was an embarrassing piece of excrement. I know some people thought T3 was decent but it had so little imagination. I was not bowled over by Terminator Salvation (T4) either. The only redeeming factor of T3 was the Gavin Rossdale - Blue Man Group song called The Current, which was played at the end.

Here is the awesome song:

Alistair AndersonAlistair Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00354851981579577005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008456083878756576.post-47838109248334478952011-07-09T11:58:00.009+02:002011-07-11T22:01:24.782+02:00Film Review: Scream 4Rating: 8/10 - Very Good

This is better than most people could expect from a sequel 11 years on. In fact, the team behind Scream 4, has not only made a more than decent sequel, but also managed to reach the heights of Scream 1, with this mostly fresh, entertaining movie. If you do not enjoy this, you have no concept of what makes a good horror movie. You are probably some clown who gets excited every time that there is another Saw film. Those movies lose more sense with every torrid incarnation. Director, Wes Craven, creator Kevin Williamson and the rest of his crew have made a very clever film that makes Scream a stylish parody that deserves praise.

Director: Wes Craven. Starring: David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Adam Brody and Rory Culkin. Age Restriction: 16VL. Running Time: 111 Minutes.

The movie is set 15 years after the first film and ten years after the third. Sidney Prescott returns to the small town of Woodsboro, to release her autobiography, which is part of her healing process. But when she arrives, a killer, who looks like Ghostface, starts killing students from Woodsboro High, including her younger cousin's friends. Sidney wanted to move on from all the pain but someone won't let her. She, Dewey Riley, who is now a sheriff after being a deputy in the original trilogy and Gail Weathers Riley, Dewey's new husband and the reporter-turned novelist, set out to investigate the murders.

They have to learn from the teenagers of the school what the new rules of horror movies are as they try to survive. The movie's tag line is new decade new rules and the film makers poke fun at recent horror movies and their reliance on gore and voyeurism.

Neve Campbell plays Sidney. She has not appeared in many big box office movies since Scream 3. She plays Sidney well in this movie and fans should enjoy the role which "broke her" as an actress in the 1990s. One of the clever things that Scream 1 did was to kill off its biggest star at the time, Drew Barrymore, in the opening scene. Campbell had been seen in the TV series, Party of Five and in the cult horror movie, The Craft, but Scream elevated her career, at least for a while. I thought she was great in Three To Tango and The Company. She probably made audiences a bit light-headed while sitting in the bath in the former and dancing in the latter. Let's not forget Wild Things, which was a sleazy film, which definitely excited many teenagers.

Cox and Arquette are both good and the joining cast is entertaining. The movie must be commended for all of the interesting nuances in the dialogue. It even has a cheesy take on society, which makes it more entertaining.

The new generation's cast of Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Emma Roberts, Anthony Anderson and even Adam Brody, all deliver solid performances. They may be playing bratty teenagers, which is not particularly new, but the viewer actually cares a bit about them. The film makers make us want to see people survive the movie. There may be some characters that one would not mind seeing get ripped to shreds by a knife-wielding maniac, but on the whole you support the characters and become fairly freaked out by the killings, even if they seem de-sensitised to the violence. The film makers are telling us that the youth has become de-sensitised to violence and maybe lost some of its innocence.

This is a gory, funny, sometimes silly film that respects its series and has enough smart extras to be worth a couple of viewings.

Verdict: This is a clever movie that should be beyond pretentious gits who expect it to be an entirely new take on horror films. The movie instead returns to the parody-serious formula of the original, which works well. It may make horror movies popular again but essentially, Scream 4, has made the series it was born from cool again.

Alistair AndersonAlistair Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00354851981579577005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008456083878756576.post-85322588730005598372011-07-07T15:07:00.010+02:002011-07-07T15:42:24.607+02:00Thursday's Cheese: Can't Stop The Music

I'd almost forgotten this movie. The new Marvel movie, Captain America: The First Avenger will just be called The First Avenger in certain countries, Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios were worried that anti-American sentiment would turn many viewers in foreign territories, away from the film, giving distributors around the world the option of shortening the title to "The First Avenger".

Yet the only countries that did this were Russia, Ukraine and South Korea. The villain in the film and comic book upon which it is based is called The Red Skull. He is supposed to be a Nazi but he looks red so maybe he could be seen as a Russian by some folks too? Some Ukrainians may feel similar but I do not know how South Korea fits in.
Bad movies can be enjoyable guilty pleasures to watch, however, so here are a few that you may enjoy:

Avatar: The Last Airbender

This movie makes no sense despite looking fairly cool. It also had awful child actors in it.

Batman and Robin

A classic stinker. I love watching this film for laughs. It was the fourth film in the series and second directed by Joel Schumacher and it was awful, a rare blight on 1997; a great year for entertainment.

Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy: Mammals, a day of reckoning is coming. Apart from being a business magazine, Forbes Magazine is perhaps most most well known for its annual lists of the wealthiest people in various fields such as sports and film as well as their Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. They have recently released their list of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood and to be honest there are no real shocks here. It's pretty much the usual suspects with newbie Kristen Stewart (Twilight Saga) thrown in for good measure but that's hardly a surprise. Check out the full list below:
According to the Huffington Post, Johnny Depp is said to be in talks for Pirates of the Caribbean 5. The reason? The fourth film, On Stranger Tides, was thought to be a 'fresh start' for the series. This was no doubt as there was no sign of Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley. Somehow I think the 'fresh start' has more to do with the ringing of the cash register rather than any attempts at inconsequential things like story, plot, pacing.

Is there really a need to drag out a story based on a Disney park ride to five, five, 3 hour long movies? Yes the first was fun, the second was okay, by the third it felt like been-there-done-that, and the fourth was kind of fun, but not entirely redeemed by Penelope Cruz and a new storyline. Does sucking every last ounce of life out of an idea always work?

One quick trip down memory lane will attest. Jaws 4: The Revenge. Policy Academy 4, 5, 6......Lethal Weapon 4, 5. Die Hard, even. And that one started fabulously. When the heck does someone call it a day? When it goes straight from studio to DVD?

I won't be watching another Pirates film. With the latest film in the giant fighting robots franchise on course for $416 million worldwide in it's first seven days of release, it's likely that it will top at out at over $1 billion worldwide and thereby making it a no-brainer that there will indeed be a Transformers 4 in the near future. Director Michael Bay and lead actor Shia LaBeouf have confirmed that they won't be back for the next instalment so it is pretty much guaranteed that Transformers 4 will be reboot. As much as I've mostly enjoyed all three films (even the supposedly abysmal Revenge Of The Fallen) there are some changes that I would like to see in the next film. Here are my suggestions for Transformers 4:

1. More Cybertron Please!

If Avatar made one contribution to humankind, it was to show that the general movie-going public isn't as averse to strange new CGI worlds as most Hollywood execs would have you believe. Therefore I believe that there's no good reason why the next Transformers shouldn't be set mostly, perhaps entirely, on Cybertron. Hopefully it'll be a prequel where we get to see how the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons first broke out. That would pretty awesome.

2. A Half-decent Screenplay Would Be Nice

A reboot requires fresh new ideas and therefore Paramount needs to hire a new screenwriter for the next batch of sequels. Ehren Kruger's screenplays have been the weakest link of the last two films so he definitely needs to go and hopefully they bring in some new writing talent.

3. Bring On The Dinobots

If you think that Transformers that change into cars look cool, wait till you see the Dinobots who, you guessed it, transform into dinosaurs. They're pretty cool and badass plus they would be an awesome way of introducing the wider world to an expanded Transformers universe so I'm definitely keen on seeing them on the big screen.

4. Less Humans, More Robots

This ties in to points 1 and 3 but I want to emphasise it because this really is what Transformers is all about. The events that take place on Earth form a relatively small part of the canon and I believe that the best way for the series to reboot is to move away from Earth to other more exotic and frankly interesting parts of the Transformers universe.

5. NO MORE DORKY HUMOUR!!!

Please for the love of God make it stop! A straightforward action-thriller, no-nonsense Transformers would be the best thing ever. The humour in the current series is at best unfunny but mostly excruciating to sit through.

Here are a few trailers for you to enjoy. Sometimes trailers give away the plot to films they preview but they can be entertaining nonetheless. Enjoy:

Spy Kids: All The Time In The World

Why is there a fourth Spy Kids movie? None of the first three were good films but some youngsters enjoyed them. Robert Rodriguez directs again. I think he was lucky in making the Desperado series, including Once Upon A Time in Mexico, as every film he has helmed since has been rather unimpressive in my opinion, except for Sin City, which was excellent. Jessica Alba starred in that and she features in this new Spy Kids film too. Perhaps she will deliver an interesting performance? She probably has some kind of motherly or old-sister role so that could force more out of her.

The Three Musketeers

We have another Three Musketeers movie. This one could me worse than the watchable 1994 movie or maybe even better. It is quite difficult to predict, seeing that it has the likes of Mathhew Macfadyen, Christoph Waltz and even Orlando, what happened to him, Bloom. It also features Mads Mikkelsen and Milla Jovovich. These actors all have shown some level of quality in their performances but the sometimes awful, hardly ever good, Paul W.S. Anderson directs. I would be less critical of him since I enjoyed his Event Horizon, Resident Evil movies and Mortal Kombat, which he directed but he made a weak Death Race. This guy has been an action movie man his whole career but hopefully he will couple this film with a decent storyline and acting.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6's echelons. - Imdb.com

This film may be very good, given the fact that it is based on a John le Carré novel and is directed by Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson. The cast is a who's who of cool, many up and coming British actors; Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, Simon McBurney, Tom Hardy I expect a clever, well-made British thriller. (Gary Oldman and Colin Firth are established, I realise).Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008456083878756576.post-12198448496601088892011-07-05T11:44:00.005+02:002011-07-05T12:01:39.228+02:00America's Sweethearts?

The negative press emanating off the latest Tom Hanks film Larry Crowne could power an entire nuclear waster disposal unit for the rest of humanity's existence. It has yet to release here, so I'm not going to join in the trend. But it did make me think about Hollywood, the career of an actor or actress and the damage of the typecast.

Last night I watched A Breath of Scandal, a rather forgettable but pleasant enough oldie with Sophia Loren as a spoilt Viennese princess who falls in love with an American (John Gavin, who I can't say rings any huge bells). But to my point, La Loren pouts her way through the material looking bleached and frou-frou. If you looked closer, you could make out the rumblings of the superb actress underneath, but it was hard to tell under all that cheese. Which led me to wonder. Would we have Sophia Loren screen icon, if she had been typecast earlier in her career. I doubt it.

Tom Hanks likes to play a lovable, nice guy who sort of stumbles upon extraordinary circumstances (Splash, Big, The Green Mile, Cast Away, The Terminal), when he's not acting as a slightly slow Gump of a man (Forrest Gump), voicing a toy cowboy (Toy Story franchise), and every now and then breaking the mold (Philadelphia, Road to Perdition). He is a multiple Oscar winner and to all intents and purposes, a movie hero, an American sweetheart. Slow and steady.
So what's with his apparent lack of pulling power?

Maybe audiences, who have grown used to Tom Hanks over the years, know what they're going to get. If it's Tom Hanks, well, you know that it will probably be a good film, and it will probably have the right elements of drama and comedy, and slightly bittersweet ending.

And maybe that's enough to have them staying at home content to wait for the DVD or the TV re-run. Just a thought.

Which was your favourite Tom Hanks?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1008456083878756576.post-39481910827486752532011-07-04T22:57:00.005+02:002011-07-05T13:52:22.149+02:00Snow White To Be A Trilogy

Film site TotalFilm.com reported on Monday that the new Snow White And The Huntsman film will be a trilogy.
Producer Joe Roth said the Kristen Stewart-starring fairytale revamp would constitute three films.

"It's meant to be the first in a series of films," he said.

"This story will end, but there will be questions remaining for these three characters."

It sounds to me like a Stewart-vehicle to make yet more money. She has been in a bunch of Twilight films so why can she not star in another slew of fantastical movies?

She plays Snow White, who is sent away by Charlize Theron’s evil queen. Snow White then meets the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth of Thor).

"We retain the basic story in the same way we retain the basic story of Alice, a young girl meant to be the queen who is cast out," Mr Roth said.

"The Huntsman is a mercenary, in the sense that he's a guy who is very able in the woods, more able than most anyone. His job is to capture runaway girls, who are all fleeing the kingdom because of the queen.

"He's a nondescript bounty hunter, as we first meet him... He's not a nice guy, but not only that he’s someone who has lost hope and lost faith. He has lost his wife, given up on everything," he said.

I think Hemsworth may be able to act but Stewart leaves me with questions. Theron may make a good queen.
Love him or hate him, the fairly consistent box office earnings of Tyler Perry's films mean that he sure knows how to please his core audience. Whether or not the actual films are any good is debatable because box office earnings are NOT directly proportional to great film making. So is the latest film in the Madea series any good? See my full review after the jump.

Loretta Devine stars as Shirley, the mother of three children who really can't stand each other and the film focuses on her efforts to try and bring them together. Renee (Lauren London) is the oldest and easily the least likeable of the three. She's a mean-spirited and selfish individual who only cares about her career and her young son and pretty much nothing else in the world. This puts a strain on her marriage and her relationship with her family because she seemingly has no time for them. Most offended by Renee's snobby attitude is her younger sister Tammy (Natalie Desselle-Reid) who, above all else, takes issue with how Renee always has bitchy comments to make about what a poor job she is doing raising her two sons. In Renee's defence she is indeed correct in her assessment. Tammy's children are a rude, unruly and disrespectful bunch who, worst of all, are very poorly acted. Despite their constant quibbling, one thing that these two sisters have in common, in addition to not being particularly good mothers, is that they are not very good wives either. They both constantly bully and verbally abuse their husbands who somehow still stick with them through all their nonsense in the hopes that they might once again become the good women that they originally fell in love with. Finally there's the younger brother Byron (Shad 'Bow Wow' Moss) who, unsurprisingly, is an ex-convict struggling to stick to the straight and narrow. Far worse than his criminal record is the fact that he has a son by what is easily one of the most horrendous stereotypes of a black woman I have ever had the displeasure of seeing on the big screen. To top it all off there's Madea (Tyler Perry) herself who is not much better as far as stereotypes go.

Madea is the one given the unenviable task of bringing all of these sibling rivals together for a family dinner where Shirley has a major announcement to make. The problem is, by the time you get to that part of the film, whatever life that was in you is long dead and you simply don't care anymore. Apart from a brief 30 minute period around when the family reunion actually occurs with the expected fireworks and clashes of egos, this film is a complete abomination. Poorly directed and riddled with abysmal attempts at humour, as a bonus, Tyler Perry even throws in every conceivable negative black stereotype for good measure. Nevermind black people uplifting each other, this film achieves the exact opposite. His good friend Oprah must be so proud...

Verdict: Boring, unfunny and incredibly racist. The second half of the film is a marked improvement on the first but it's still not nearly good enough to make this mess of a film bearable. Only Tyler Perry groupies and members of the Klu Klux Klan can derive any pleasure from this.
The Autobots, the ones on the side of humankind, help to fight the Decepticons. The Decepticons are trying to locate pillars that will enable a bridge that will bring Cybertron into Earths atmosphere and hence they will take over the planet.

The entire film is, as said earlier, very similar to the previous two. It has bits of comedy here and there, that is quite funny. Once again Sam’s parents play a not very traditional parental role and provide for some funny moments. Sam again has an extremely good looking girlfriend, who mainly just gets in the way all the time.
There is again a whole lot of robotic fighting and robots trying to take over something. Basically there are good guys and bad guys, good robot aliens and bad robot aliens.

The action scenes are done very well and are very convincing. The 3D does have some cool effects, but I’m sure the film is just as effective without the 3D. The acting is good, besides for Carly who is played by Rosie Huntington-Whitely, and she is not the greatest actress. She replaces Megan Fox from the previous Transformers, as the eye candy of the film. That is basically all she has to offer.

Verdict: Overall a good film with some funny and some very cool parts. However, more could have been done to make it more original. Transformers fans will surely enjoy it.
Toy Story 3 may be a seen as a child's film about talking toys but it was made for adults who grew up with its predecessors. The first film in the trilogy was groundbreaking for its use of 3-D animation and well-written story. The second was a decent follow-up. The third finishes the tale well. It may make some adult viewers feel nostalgic but will also gain some new child fans, who could then watch the first two films.
Director: Lee Unkrich. Screenplay: Michael Arndt. Story: John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich. Producer: Darla K. Anderson. Cinematography: Jeremy Lasky and Kim White. Editing: Ken Schretzmann. Studio: Pixar. Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures. Starring: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty, Don Rickles, Michael Keaton, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Blake Clark, Estelle Harris and Jodi Benson. Age Restriction: PG. Running Time: 103 Minutes.

Toy Story 3 features Andy, the owner of the toy characters in the film. Andy is leaving for university, which makes the toys worry that he will throw them away. Andy decides to take Woody with him and puts the other toys in a garbage bag for storage in the attic. But the toys are accidentally thrown out when Andy's mom finds the bag and puts it on the curb with the trash, causing them to think they are no longer wanted. They escape and climb in a box to be donated to the Sunnyside Daycare. Woody, the only toy who saw what really happened, is forced to follow the others and tries to explain they were thrown out by mistake, but they refuse to listen.

The lovable characters are back, including the cowboy, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, the cowgirl; Jessie, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Dinosaur and Barbie.

In its 15 year life from 1995 to 2010, Pixar made 11 films. These films are basically a list of classics. They are Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL E and Up. Toy Story 2 was the eleventh. Cars 2 is due out in SA this year.

Verdict: Toy Story 3 is an entertaining film with various themes and strong character subplots within it. One of the most entertaining is how Barbie meets Ken. They were designed for each other but the film makers make their courtship rather cute. Essentially the movie forces its characters and the viewer to grow up. That is not to say that a child watching the film will not be a child anymore when it ends but those who watching Toy Story at the age of ten, when it was released in 1995, may break out into tears.
There is said to be a curse that affects the Best Actress Oscar winners. They either lose their errant husbands, choose dud roles or slide into obscurity. Or all three. I was hopeful that Reese Witherspoon would not be one of them. From her performance in Man in the Moon to Walk the Line, she showed a certain style in her choice of film. Then along came this one.

Not that I can blame Ms Witherspoon for choosing to work with James L. Brooks. Who wouldn't? Terms of Endearment. Broadcast News. As Good as it Gets. Oscar winners. It also highlights his magic with working with Jack Nicholson who appears in all three.
But the magic inherent in all of his previous films, is AWOL here.

This is an utterably dull tale of Lisa (Witherspoon) who is a professional softball player who has been cut from her team. She is aimless, directionless and carries such a blank expression I felt like hurling her some Valium to get her through. She is set up with George (Paul Rudd). There is no chemistry in their first meeting, and for the viewer that's pretty much how it stays. He's under investigation for any number of dodgy dealings, providing the unwilling scapegoat for his father (Jack Nicholson)and seems to have misplaced his spine at the Lost and Found. Lisa is having a fling/relationship/something or other with Matty (Owen Wilson), a cardboard cut-out ladies man.

The movie ambles along. It's neither funny nor dramatic. The talents of its four stars are completely wasted. The dialogue is truly dull. Can I think of anything to redeem it? Yes. It's excellent for those suffering from insomnia.

Verdict: Awful.
